My apologies to Geena Zaslavski and Carol McErlean!  They crossed the finish line at the Lake Geneva tri as well, and called and gave an excellent recap on the way back home.  Their families withstood the elements as well to cheer them on.

And apologies to Julie Hacker, who completed the Steelhead 1/2 Ironman in Michigan, not Lake Geneva.  Julie came in 4th in her age group.  And congrats too to Derrick Milligan who competed at Steelhead as well.

Congrats to all!

Linda

Subject: workouts this week

Hi All:

This week we will still hold the swimming workout this evening with Pam, and the track workout at the track with Tony.

Let me know if you will be attending the track workout.  Many of you are doing the Wild Onion this weekend, and I know you will be tapering, so I need to let Tony know if we don't need him to show up.

Congrats to Julie Hacker, Rob Nelson, and Marty Walsh for their participation in what seemed to be a treacherous Lake Geneva triathlon.  Rob visited us at the store with the full limp to prove it (sorry about the wipeout in the wet conditions!).

And best of luck to Hyuen Min, David Heidt, Molly Heffernan, Tony McShane, Brett Pisha and me in the Wild Onion this weekend!  And bets of luck to Barry Wallach and Laura Tucker in this weekend's Lake Michigan tri as well!  Kick some butt everyone!

When we return we'll start batting around ideas for revving training back up in November.

Linda and Brett

Subject: masters details

Hi Linda,

Could you forward these details on to your tri club members in order to encourage them to swim over the off season.

Thanks,

Pam

Here are the details again for NASA Masters.

Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7-8:30 pm

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 12-1:30 pm

Saturday 9:30-11am

The fee is $200 or $180 if you are an affiliate of the University for each of 3 sessions per year.

Sept 1-Dec 31

Jan 1-Apr 30

May 1-Aug 31

A new session has just begun.  The membership office is right in the lobby of the pool.  The phone number is 847.491.4300.

There is not much difference between what we did with the Tri-club and what we will do in Masters.  I will encourage you to branch out from swimming only distance free and I will likely encourage you to try competitions for training purposes and to help you tri swim, but other than that, nothing is different.

Take care and please let me know if you need any other info.

Pam

Subject: this week in training

Hi Everyone:

This week will be a pared down version of normal as we begin to roll into taper and off-season mode.  Many of you have asked how to keep in shape in the winter, and doing so begins with this:  take some time off.  Remember all those things you never got to do while you were training?  Yoga?  Pilates?  Weekend breakfasts with friends?  Now you can do them again!

One week off is not enough.  Personally, I am planning on taking off the entire month of October.  Sure I'll hop on my bike, run a bit, and swim, but with no particular goal in mind but to have fun.  And you should do the same!  I promise you'll come back a stronger and more well-rested athlete come late fall/early winter.

Swimming

Pam will still coach swimming on Wed. at 7:00 at Northwestern, and can do so indefinitely.  Please let me know who is interested in continuing by e-mailing an RSVP at this address.

Running

Tony also can continue the running at both the track and Lloyd hill until the weather holds us back.  This week we will meet at the hill (those of you who did 6 miles of speed work on the track last week could use the break!) on Thursday at 6:30.  We are hosting an open house at 7 at the store, where all our fall stuff will be discounted, so be sure to stop by after your run.

Our winter tri club is starting to take form, and we will foward details as soon as they are available.  And look for the e-mail regarding our open house today!

Brett and Linda

The season is coming to a close, and with it some issues to ponder:

SWIM UPDATE

Pam will be unable to coach us on Saturdays until after the holidays.  She is still available on Wednesdays evenings, however.  Swimming is great conditioning to keep up during the off season, so if any of you are still up for it let me know.  We do have a couple of options:

Heidi Toft, who coaches Evanston Master's can offer us her services and the ETHS pool on Sunday mornings.  Or those of you diehards who always show up on Saturdays (Barry, Rob, Tony, Laura, Geena) could also be my guest on Saturday mornings at NU and I can write up a workout for us to do.  I also coach swimming at EAC on Tuesday nights, and you are all welcome to join in on that too.  The guest fee is about the same as swimming at NU, but the pool is 5 yards shorter.

Then again you swim fans (Barry, Rob, Tony, Laura and Geena) should probably join NU master's anyways.  It's a great group and a nice mix to winter workout activities.

So let me know what you would like to do!

WINTER TRI CLUB

Looks like we will be launching a winter tri club that will begin in November.  This club will offer swim, outdoor cycling and running workouts, as well as indoor spinning, plyometrics and gait analysis.  Let me know if you have interest.  Those who have already expressed interest I know who you are!!!  We are planning on training for a May race, such as the St. Croix half ironman (which also has a sprint race) or the Wildflower in California (which involves camping at the race site). Both are epic races!  If you have a preference let me know!

TRI CLUB THANK YOU PARTY

On the second Thursday of every month we will be hosting a party at RaceLogix where we will close the doors at 7 and hold seminars complete with free food and drink and discounts ranging from 10-30% on our stuff.  A week from this Thursday is the date for this event for our tri club.  We want to thank you all for coming out to our workouts, wearing your RaceLogix gear, and providing a wonderful first season for us!  Please let us know if you can make it via e-mail at the store:  trimama@sbcglobal.net

WORKOUTS THIS WEEK

The workouts this week are as follows:

Swim

Wednesday evening at 7:00 at the NU pool.  Fee:  $10.  Please RSVP to me at trimama@sbcglobal.net.  Pam is unable to teach on Saturday, and I have our four kids to myself this weekend while my husband competes in Ironman Wisconsin (go Bill!), so I will be unable to take her place.  Please meet amongst yourselves and swim open water if you can!

Bikes and Runs

The speed workout with Tony Morton will be at the track this Thursday at 6:30.  These workouts will continue as long as weather is permitting, so let me know if you have interest in keeping them going during the off season.

Our bike rides will be on hiatus through September, and will resume again once winter tri club begins in October/November.  Laura and I will be riding in Barrington on Friday morning early if any of you competing in Lake Geneva would like to meet us out there.

Train well, recover well, and off season well (except for you Lake Geneva and Onionites... you're almost there!)--

Linda and Brett

Hi Everyone:

Warning!!! This will be a lengthy e-mail!!!

Congrats to Julie Hacker, Katie Bailey, Anna Ferguson, Beth Galiani, Rob Nelson, Elizabeth Zellmer and all the Team Dreamers who participated in the Accenture tri!  There were 2 top 5 age group finishes that I have heard of so far (yae Julie and Elizabeth).  Incredible!  Please forward me details of your race.  Working the booth at the expo I was struck with a horrible case of tri envy.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi.

Before we move on to this week, I wanted to poll you all regarding club operation from this point out.

Many of you are doing Lake Geneva in three weeks, so club should definitely continue through that weekend.  The hill and track workouts are also useful for those doing the Wild Onion or the marathon.  The question therefore is:

How long would you like the club to continue through the summer season, and would you be interested in a winter club that trains for an early spring race?  Which leads me to the exciting news:

An opportunity exists where we may be able to train at a local health club  that would give us access to indoor cycling (spinning).  The run and swim workouts would remain the same, although plyometrics would move indoors. The thought is to train through the winter and prepare for an early spring race, say the St. Croix (a nice reward for hard work!) in May. Team Dream did this in May, and they are the inspiration for this plan.

The St. Croix is a half-ironman, but there are early May options in other places, like Florida and Cancun. We just thought it might be fun to travel to race. Getting on a plane with a bike is one of life's joys if you've never done it. Assembling a bike in a hotel room and getting on a bike course with hills the likes of which we don't have here is just fantastic.

So is anyone game?  I know many of you are, but wanted to get a head count and an idea of when you are all planning your off season (you need an off season!).  Please respond by e-mail to me at the store (trimama@sbcglobal.net).

Ok, on to the workouts.

SWIM

Swim, as usual, is this evening at 7 and Saturday at 7am.  I will not be at either of these workouts, but you are in good hands with Pam.  Please RSVP to trimama@sbcglobal.net if you will be attending these workouts. Fee:  $10. There are some of you who still owe fees for swimming, so please pass those on to Pam on Wednesday or Saturday.  Thanks!

BIKE

The bikes can take place on Saturday after the swim or Sunday at 7.  Pleae e-mail me if there is interest.  Matt can take out a group on Saturday after the swim.  Once our cafe opens on September 8th we would like to have the bikes end up at the shop for free coffee.  Brett is out of town this weekend, and I am minding the store, so I won't be able to attend the rides, but have fun!!!

RUN

The track workout will be at the Mt. Trashmore again this Thursday at 6:30 since the track is under construction.  It should be done after this week.  Again, the store is open until 8:00 and I work the late shift, so I'll miss you all!

That's about it.  Sorry to be long-winded.  Please do let me know your interest at trimama@sbcglobal.net  in a winter club, and keep up the good work training for Lake Geneva and the Onion!

Linda
